After reading about the Dystopian/Utopia topic and watching all the course video’s and the instense twitter stream on #edcmooc a thought startet to crew in my mind.
Most people has heard about HAL9000 or just Hal, the computer with the AI (artificial inteligence) from Arthur C. Clarkes books and the film version of 2001 – A space odyssey. Back then it was released in 1968 it was frightning to think about an computer that could “act” like a human being, that aside have some kind of reflections of feelings towards humans. People was talking about how this future might be true dividing them in dystopia and utopia blocks. But that is almost 50 years ago now. Back in 2001 1 sat down with some friends and watched the movie for the second time i think. The world has just “surrived” the famous “year 2k virus” and what more natural would it be watching a movie called 2001 – A space odyssey. I was 16 back then and i still remember how frighed i was after watching it. I was doing a philosophy course at school at the same time and i watched while the though was going through my mind – this movies is 30 years old, and it fit on a large scale perfect at your world right now. Most of the things we saw in the movies was normal daily life things we could relate to. But how was HAL different from the AI we was used to watch in series like KITT from Knight Rider and Data from Star Trek.
HAL was still a machine and was related to as a big machine, some arguments may say that its the same with KITT, but not total HAL through out the movie just this big machine who had its own plans with the crew and the mission. Data is an android which we can relate to because of this human form and he tell then what he can’t do, because he is an android. Hal is the big thing with the red eye who want the most craved power in the world: control over others. But that power has been craved after by most evil robots since False Maria in Metropolis, HAL does it in another way, he get in under the skin of people insted of just bringin destruction to the party. He understand the human nature in someway and thats the scary part of his AI.
But how does that relate to the digital age of 2013?
The current age then you start using the internet is 4 and up to that age you can proberly find your whole life already online because of your parents who uploaded zillions of pictures to the social networks of you. So you can say that today we live 2 lifes, an online and an offline life. The online everybody can see and watch and many people is living that life more than the offline life. All that data that millions of people is putting online everyday about their life, big machine go through with varius algrothymes and other math stuff, that no ordanary man can understand. The very moment you connect to the internet it already have and idea about you want to do, its looked through your data and recoomends stuff to you based on things you like, music you hear or the movie you saw on netflix the night before. It knows you like no other person do, its opitmised to suit your need at that very moment you need it. Search engines even finish you search questions for you before you entered it all.
In some strange way i would say that its almost looks like its getting a sort of consciousness. Not a controlled consciousness but one that is floating in some sort of undefine cloud between being there and not. Assuming that somehow it devolep a kind of consciousness how would we react to it? we are being fed up with all the crazy stuff from the sci-fi movies and the helping hands from the medical industry with their service robots. But this is a AI with consciousness who knows all about you before you even find out its there. Its not like the matrix that you can break out of, its the source that connects around 70% of the people on the earth atm. We will still be free humans, but we couldn’t using anything digital device without the AI knowing it and reading it.
So are we in someway creating our own version of HAL??
